Lesson 3
Guess that word
Choose a trickier word from the story and describe it or show an action that describes it. Invite children to guess what the word is, e.g. ‘suspiciously’: thinking that someone has done something they should not have done because of the way they are acting, demonstrate a ‘suspicious’ look for the girl etc.
Elicit as many synonyms as possible for the word.
Possible words: adventure, queue, suspiciously, muttered, wailed, check-in, weigh, around, helped, wondered, load, weighs, ton, burst open
Participation and practice reading
Revisit the text using the interactive print big book. Move the focus from decoding words and sentences to reading with expression, particularly for exclamation marks and question marks. Introduce the concept of ‘character’ – A character is a person in a story or film.
Let’s sing along!
Have children listen to ‘I’m a Little Airplane’, joining in and singing along when they are familiar.

Word Families
To help with sounding out and blending short words you could concentrate on different word families. I will add two a week for you to focus on, one on Mondays and one on Wednesdays. Use the sounds of each letter to read the words. The girls could try and think of other words that belong to the word family for that day. This is also a good rhyming activity, an important skill for learning to read.
Word Family 1 -at
sat, pat, mat, cat, rat, hat
Writing:
I hope the writing is going ok for you all. I have seen some lovely work in your emails! Remember, learning to write is not just about pencil and paper!! At this age, the girls need to be practicing their fine motor skills and strengthening their hand muscles to help with good, comfortable pencil grip. This happens with play activities like playdough, jigsaws, cutting and sticking- even things like closing zips and buttons and peeling an orange are good exercises for little hands and fingers!
Also, writing can be done in lots of playful ways to help keep it fun and to motivate the girls while helping to imbed the shape of each letter in their memories. Some of the ways we use in class are:
You can continue writing your name with as many joined letters as you can.
You could also write some of the -at words and draw pictures to illustrate them if you liked.
Today’s letter to revise is f
