Oral language:
Big Book- Cars, Trains and Airplanes
Lesson 3
- What am I?
Select a mode of transport and describe it without naming it, e.g. this has enormous wings (airplane); this leaves from a station (train); this moves in the water (boat); you can drive around Ireland in this (car). Children must guess what mode of transport is being described. When they are familiar with the format, children could take turns giving the clues and other family members could give the answers. Encourage children to think of multiple ways to describe the same mode of transport, e.g. this is the fastest mode of transport; this travels through the sky; the person who drives this is called a pilot (airplane).
- Participation and practice reading: Revisit the text using the interactive big book. Pick out any sight words they might recognise.
Reading:
Core Reader- We have now covered all four of the core readers for the Junior Infant Starlight programme. I know lots of you are doing lots of other reading at home so you can keep up the good work there! If you’d like more readers to work on, remember the resources we have mentioned already:
Oxford Owls
Remember : Oxford Owls have a free e-book library which is very good for supplementary reading: home.oxfordowl.co.uk/books/free-ebooks/
Note: You will need to set up an account to view the books (if you have not done so already). Then browse by Oxford Level. It is best to start with less challenging material and move up through the levels. The Oxford Reading Tree books are most suitable. If you are unsure which level your child should be on, just begin with Level 1 and progress from there.
Reading Egg https://app.readingeggsjunior.com/
If you have any difficulty in accessing these do let me know.
Everybody Worries is a lovely story about these strange times you might like to read. https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/interactives/29765.html
Sight words:
We have now covered all the sight words for Junior Infants. Normally, his time of year would be all about revising and consolidating them using fun games and supplementary readers. I’ll add the list of all the ones the girls have done since January to help you revise and I’ll keep adding a word of the day for you to focus on as revision, but feel free to focus on whichever words you feel need attention and keep spotting them in any books or reading you are doing. Some of these words are in your child’s word folder but I have added a printout of all of them her in case you’d like to have the full set- just print and cut out. Don’t worry if you do not have printing facilities though…perhaps you could write them out on small pieces of card/paper instead.

https://www.themeasuredmom.com/10-simple-sight-word-activities/ These are 10 quite simple to implement sight word games to help revise.
As always, you can revise all letter names and sounds and use the list of words posted previously to practice sounding out short words.
Writing:
q is our next new letter.
What sound does it make? What starts with this sound?
- Note that u always follows q to make the <qu> sound
Do they know a teacher that has Qu in her name…?
Use this rhyme to help practice writing: Slant up. Curve around. Curve back down and around. Straight up. Straight down to the ground. Slant up.

Write the words ‘first’ and ‘last on two pieces of paper.
Today we are looking at the concepts of ‘first’ and ‘last’. Normally we would do a lot of work on this in school, lining up the children and holding up cards with ‘first’ and ‘last’ on them. We would also relate it to how we line up for the yard, having a Line Leader who is first in the line and a Line Finisher who is last in the line At home, you could use toys. Line up stuffed toys and dolls. Tell the child where the start of the line is. Ask “Which one is first? Which one is last?” Then change the line-up and ask “Which one is first now? Which is last now?” You could line up Lego figurines, wooden toys, cutlery and do the same activity. Get the child to put the words ‘first ‘and ‘last’ in the correct places.

Poster – Holiday Fun
Lesson 3
Digital poster (Explore mode): Talk and discussion.
Go to the Explore mode again and play a game of Who am I?
Model the game first by choosing a character in the poster to speak as and giving clues as to which character you are, e.g.:
- I am building an enormous sandcastle with my bucket and spade.
You are the boy on the top of the poster making a sandcastle. - I am jumping into the pool in my swimming ring.
You are the girl on the bottom of the poster on the right jumping into the swimming pool. - I am enjoying a delicious cool summer treat.
You are the girl on the top of the poster, eating an ice-cream. - I am skimming smoothly over the crashing waves.
You are the girl in the first picture on the top of the poster, surfing. - I am floating with my sister in the clear, blue water.
You are the girl in the middle on the right in the swimming pool. - I am basking in the warm sunshine as I lie on the warm soft sand.
You are the girl in the main/big picture on the poster. - I am setting off for the beach on holidays with my dog.
You are the girl in the boot of the car on the top right side of the poster.
When modelling, use the most complex language the children can understand. Scaffold the children to identify the person in question as clearly as possible. Focus on descriptive language, complex sentences and prepositions. When the children are familiar with the game, encourage some children to choose a character to speak as and give the clues, as previously modelled by you.
Digital poster (Activity mode): Fun at the Beach
Go to the Activity mode of the poster. Play the sorting activity. Ask the children to decide which of the activities listed can be done at the beach. Encourage them to give reasons for their choices.

Write out the numerals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, on pieces of paper/card. Put 6 small plates on the table. Put 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Lego pieces on the plates and leave a plate with no pieces on it (this will be 0. If you don’t have Lego pieces any small item such as buttons, pieces of pasta, teabags will do.
Ask your child to put the correct numbers on the plate with that number. Then get the child to line up the plates in order, starting with the plate which has nothing on it (0) all the way to 5. Revise the words first and last from yesterday.

Digital poster (Label mode)
Go to the Label mode of the poster. Review the vocabulary. Have the children drag the labels onto the correct location in the poster.
Digital poster (Poem mode): ‘Ice Lolly’
Go to the Poem mode of the poster and play the poem ‘Ice Lolly’ by Pie Corbett:
Ice Lolly

round the bottom,
do not stop.
Suck the lolly.
lick your lips.
Lick the sides
as it drips
Off the stick –
quick, quick,
lick, lick –
Red rocket
on a stick.
Have the children speak the poem with actions, increasing the pace as the poem goes on.
Unscramble the sentence
Speak sentences based around the action in the poem in the wrong order, e.g.:
licked lolly the I
red The was lolly
love I eating lollies
dripping lolly was The
Have children repeat each sentence in the correct order. They could then give their own mixed-up sentences for others to unscramble.

Draw and cut out 4 shapes - square, rectangle, triangle, circle.
Today we are revising 2D shapes. Ask your child to name the four shapes. Name some differences e. g a triangle has 3 sides; a square has 4. Place the shapes on the table, get the child to close her eyes, remove one shape and ask” What shape is missing?” Look around the house and see what shapes they can see. Ask the child to draw the four shapes out.

Art:
You could draw or paint an underwater scene using the aquatic animals you have learned about. This video might help to inspire you!
Aquatic animal vocabulary video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIcbrPvlwfA
Or you could create your own Ariel, using tinfoil, sequins or whatever you have to decorate her shiny tail!!
Extra Ideas:
Can you draw it?
Give your child a blank page and drawing material. Ask children to divide their page into four and label (by tracing, copying or writing independently) each section with one form of travel – cars, planes, trains or boats. Read aloud one page from the text to describe the mode of travel and encourage children to draw the description, e.g. p. 6 ‘Trains stop at stations. The conductor blows his whistle when it’s time to go. All aboard!’ Children can then write/copy/trace a word, phrase or sentence for each picture.
Beach ball adventure: Focus – finish the sentence
Blow up a multi-coloured beach ball if you have one. On each coloured panel of the ball stick an image to represent one of the senses, i.e. eyes, ears, nose, tongue, hand/foot. Throw the ball. Whoever catches the ball must say a sentence about something he or she saw/heard/felt/smelled/tasted on the beach/on holidays, e.g. I went on my holidays to the beach/my cousins house. I saw/heard/felt/smelled/tasted …
Scaffold the children to use descriptive language, e.g. I saw a huge jellyfish swimming in the water; I heard noisy seagulls flying in the sky; I felt soft, warm sand under my feet; I smelled delicious burgers on the barbeque; I tasted creamy, delicious ice-cream.
